Fuel prices have had the whole continent’s attention since the war broke out in the Strait of Hormuz. We have all heard the figure by now: one fifth of the world’s oil passes through the strait. The past few months have made the consequences of an unreliable route very hard to ignore for anyone buying fuel in Europe.
None of this is new; politicians have been chewing on it for years. Recent events have simply put a sharper light on the problem: Europe imports the overwhelming majority of the fuel it burns, and a narrow shipping lane thousands of kilometres away still has a say in what fuel costs and whether it arrives at all.
Renewable fuels, whether biofuels, biogas or RFNBOs, are usually framed as a climate story. We would argue they are more than a green initiative; they are also a matter of independence, and that side of the story rarely gets the attention it deserves.
Renewable fuels can change the dependency equation
Renewable fuels reduce Europe’s exposure to geopolitical, logistical and diplomatic risks that we have very little control over. They hand some of that control back.
Renewable fuels do carry a dependency of their own, however, and it is an easy one for operators to underestimate; it turns up in the paperwork rather than in a tanker’s route.
The catch
Renewable fuels are hard to distinguish from their fossil equivalents. You could burn a litre of ISCC-certified renewable diesel next to a litre of fossil diesel, and nothing about the fuel itself tells you which is which.
The only thing that separates them is the documentation trail behind them. Examples are: Proof of Sustainability , Sustainability Declaration , Guarantee of Origin , Proof of Compliance etc.
To a regulator, an auditor or a counterparty, that trail of documents is what makes a renewable fuel renewable. Take it away and you are left with fuel carrying a claim that nobody can verify.
