A renewable fuels desk books forwards long before any documentation exists. The Proof of Sustainability typically arrives up to 30 days after the delivery month it covers. That single fact splits every renewable fuel book into two layers: what you have contracted, and what is physically covered by certified documentation. The desks that see both layers, live, trade differently from the desks that see neither until back-office finishes reconciling.
This article is about that gap: why the sustainability position is a trading position, and what changes when it moves from a month-end spreadsheet to the trader’s screen.
The reconciliation lag is a trading problem
At most operators, the forward book lives in the trading sheet or the ETRM, and the PoS register lives with the compliance team. The two meet at month-end, when someone matches tickets to certificates by hand. Until then, the desk is trading on assumptions: that the August volumes are fully covered, that the September supplier’s certificate is still valid, that there is enough remaining quantity on the right PoS to serve the customer with the strictest GHG requirement.
Every one of those assumptions occasionally turns out wrong, and it always turns out wrong late. A short position that becomes visible three weeks after the trades that caused it is not a risk report; it is an incident report. Under ISCC EU mass balancing rules the books must reconcile within the balancing period, so the lag does not just cost margin, it compresses the time available to fix problems compliantly.
GHG value is a price component now
The second reason the sustainability book belongs on the desk’s screen: the attributes on the PoS are no longer paperwork, they are price. A manure-based biomethane PoS at a deeply negative carbon intensity serves a customer contract with a strict GHG guarantee. Allocate that same PoS to a buyer who never asked for it, and the value is gone, invisibly, compliantly, and permanently.
That makes allocation a commercial decision. The weighted purchase price of the PoS mix behind a sale determines the real margin of that deal, and the GHG/CI-optimised allocation determines whether low-carbon positions are spent where they pay or given away where they do not. Desks that manage this actively report the difference directly in their realised premiums. The ones that do not usually cannot see what they gave away, because the spreadsheet never calculated it.
What a live book actually looks like
In FuelFWD, the two layers are one screen. Deals enter the position on trade date, booked manually in seconds or extracted from a deal ticket. Incoming PoS are read and validated on arrival, whatever the supplier’s template, and attach to their deal as the delivery. The position report shows long and short per delivery month, forwards included, split between contractual position and physical cover. The mass balance underneath tracks remaining quantity per PoS through every partial allocation and quarterly roll-over.
The compliance layer is not a separate system; it is what makes the position trustworthy. Certificate validity is checked daily, volumes are validated against contracts at the gate, and every line in the book traces back to its source document. The position the trader sees is the position the auditor confirms.
For the desks that also earn compliance tickets, the same data feeds the certificate positions view: what each ton earns per channel and country, before the channel decision is made.
What the desk gets, concretely
Six things a trading desk can act on, all from the same record:
- Live positions, long and short. Real-time position per product and delivery month, forwards included, so a short is visible the day it is created rather than three weeks later.
- See what is actually covered. Contracted volumes versus PoS-covered volumes, tracked per deal, which is the difference between a book you can trade against and a book you hope is fine.
- Allocate for maximum value. GHG/CI-optimised PoS selection against each buyer’s requirements, so the low-carbon positions land on the contracts that pay for them.
- Know your margin per deal. Weighted purchase price and margin derived from the actual allocation, not from an assumed average.
- Process any PoS. Automated extraction and validation of incoming documentation, any template, any language, without manual entry.
- Be audit-ready in one click. Full audit trail and complete evidence export in one action, at any point in the period.
Desks that also operate physical tank capacity get the same record extended to live mass balance per storage facility, with certificate validation on book-in, multi-product blending and deal simulation against the real storage position.
Front office and back office, same screen
The practical effect is organisational. Back-office stops being the department that reports problems after the fact and becomes the function that keeps the book clean in real time. The desk stops closing deals subject to reconciliation and starts closing them against a live position. And when regulation shifts, as it does every year, under RED III and its national implementations, the change lands in configuration, not in a new spreadsheet.
The same record, across the chain
None of this is exclusive to trading desks. The two-layer problem shows up wherever contracted volumes and certified volumes move at different speeds: feedstock collectors proving chain of custody from supplier to processor, processors reconciling mass balance, GHG and yields per batch, bunker and SAF operators, LNG terminals handling liquefaction and Nabisy flows. The trader view is one lens on a single compliance record that the whole supply chain shares. What differs is which layer you look at first.
Meet us at Argus Biofuels Europe
We are exhibiting at the Argus Biofuels Europe Conference & Exhibition in London, 20 to 22 October 2026, at the Technology Pavilion. If you want to see a live book run, forward positions, a short to cover, a GHG-optimised allocation and the audit export at the end, that is exactly what we will be demonstrating at the stand.
